Many Carmel High School students take their passions outside the school day, and for students looking to do so, April is the time to look for and finalize summer plans. These internships can be valuable experiences for students looking to grow their network and pursue a passion outside of school.

The Monterey District Office of U.S. Congressman Jimmy Panetta holds year-round internships, accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Summer interns are expected to be available for 20 hours per week for pay or for volunteer hours. Interns will work on constituent correspondence, researching referrals and occasionally work with the congressman and staff. To apply, go to panetta.house.gov.

Pebble Beach Junior Golf is a paid internship opportunity for students looking to spend the summer on the green. Their website says, those interested in the internship will be expected to have a strong understanding of golf and good communication skills as they will be put to work as an on-course marshal, customer service attendant or checking people in at the pro shop. To apply, go to Pebble Beach Company’s website and search for the word “internship.”

The County of Monterey is looking for interns to help film job recruitment videos. Interns will work with the Department of Social Services and are expected to be ready to learn to use video equipment, sound recording equipment and editing software. According to their website, the position is unpaid. To learn more about the position, go to countyofmonterey.gov and click internships.

The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey holds an annual internship for high school students or graduating seniors interested in science and engineering. According to their website, the internship places students in Department of Navy laboratories where they learn from professional scientists and engineers where students are paid via stipend. To apply, go to navalsteminterns.us.

The Carmel Area Wastewater District plant is directly partnering with Carmel High School to bring internship opportunities to students interested in civil engineering. Students will learn about careers in wastewater and water safety management. The position is either paid or done for volunteer hours and selected students will work one of two internships and will find out if they were selected on April 14. To apply, visit cawd.org and search district partnerships with Carmel.

Salinas Valley Hospital holds an internship and shadowing program for students looking into a medicine track. Students shadow medical professionals over the course of five weeks, and according to their website, students develop an understanding of hospital organization, diagnosis, care plan development, patient assessment and treatment. Students that finish the program receive a stipend. To apply, go to salinasvalleyhealth.com.

The Washington Post suggests that venturing into an unfamiliar internship can help people shape their  career trajectory, build a network and improve a resume. These internships present local students with an opportunity to explore fields they are interested in outside of school and bring valuable experience to their next phase in life.
