When living in such an ideal spot, taking advantage of your surroundings this summer is a must. Whether it’s driving down the coast or to the city, spending your summer exploring the great state of California should be the top priority. So grab your keys, a copy of The Sandpiper and get that playlist started. It’s road trip time.

Big Sur

Tried and true, nothing beats Big Sur on a hot summer day. The drive alone is phenomenal, and be sure to take in the views of Bixby Bridge and McWay Falls. There, you will find some of the most iconic landmarks of the Central Coast. Spend the morning hiking between the mountains and ocean at Pfeiffer Falls Trail or spotting flowers during a quick hike at Calla Lily Valley. Looking to cool off afterwards? Make the journey to the Big Sur River Gorge before eating The Famous Ambrosiaburger at Nepenthe with an ocean-side view.

Santa Cruz

In Santa Cruz, the vibes are unmatched. Spend the morning taking a plunge at the secluded Sunny Cove Beach. Afterward, make sure to check out downtown Santa Cruz for thrifting at Oasis on Pacific or Virgo Santa Cruz and record shopping at Streetlight Records. No matter what type of food you’re craving, Santa Cruz will provide, but some locals favorites include berry pie from Gayle’s Bakery & Rosticceria and Chicken Katsu at Aloha Island Grille.

San Jose

Heading up to the bay, San Jose is a must. Whether you’re shopping at Santana Row or San Pedro Square Market, the bay has everything you could need. For those stopping to smell the flowers, heading over to Municipal Rose Garden and Japanese Friendship Garden is absolutely necessary. Complete the day with good eats from Dough Burger or birria tacos from El Bombero 408.

San Francisco

It’s time to set those alarms early and make the voyage to San Francisco. There, stop at the Photobooth Museum by Photomatica for classic photobooth pics before grabbing coffee at Le Marais to sip on while you explore the city. Now, it’s time for some sightseeing. Go to Battery Spencer for a beautiful close-up view of the Golden Gate Bridge and pack a picnic for your sunset visit at the rolling hills of Mount Tamalpais.

San Luis Obispo

In SLO, the options to spend your day are endless. Whether you want to thrift vintage at Central Coast Vintage or Black Water, spend the day taking in the sun at Avila Beach and Pirates Cove or adventure at Pacific Dunes Ranch Horseback Riding, Madonna Mountain or Oceano Dunes, there is no better place to be. Fuel your day with coffee from Bread Bike Bakery or Louisa’s Place, and my personal favorite, Taco Mafia!
