Sandpiper writer annoints decade’s best TV shows

We’ve all thought about it, but what are the 10 greatest TV shows of the last decade?

Especially in a time when shows like “Once Upon a Time” and “Cougartown” are still on TV, we like to think back to better times of television. Here’s my personal list of the 10 greatest TV shows from the last 10 years.

10. “American Horror Story” The dark, twisted, grisly anthology series pulls you in and shifts between different characters and locations, which include an insane asylum, a witch coven and a haunted house.

9. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” The comeback comedy for “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David follows his semi-fictional life after “Seinfeld” with a lot of celebrity appearances.

8. “The West Wing” A show that ended in the early 2000s, “The West Wing” gave another look inside of the White House and, ultimately, another view on how it is run.

7. “Band of Brothers” Only lower on the list because of it being a mini-series, “Band of Brothers” is one of the greatest depictions of World War II on screen and has the awards to prove it.

6. “Arrested Development” Considered by many as one of the greatest comedies of all time, the sow probably should not have done a comeback season on Netflix because it hurts the classic, original seasons.

5. “Dexter” The Miami-based forensics expert who moonlights as a serial killer of guys who slip through the police system leaves you intrigued, but at the same time hoping that each new season will be as creative and gnarly as the last.

4. “Mad Men” Can be slow and dialogue-heavy at times, but a winner of 15 Primetime Emmys…along with showing off January Jones and Christina Hendricks. I can live with that.

3. “Breaking Bad” The breakthrough show entertained millions with its over-the-top violence and awesome quotes from a now-iconic character in Walter White, brilliantly played by Bryan Cranston a.k.a. “Hal.”

2. “The Wire” The brilliant Baltimore police drama from creator David Simon did not win as many awards as one would think, yet is hailed as one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

1. “The Sopranos” In my book, the greatest TV show of all time. A morality tale about New Jersey mob boss, Tony Soprano, and how he balances his life at home with his mob life. Played by the late James Gandolfini, the character was made iconic, due to incredible acting, and the show took home 91 total awards during its tenure.

Honorable Mentions: “The Office,” “Homeland,” “Entourage” and “Boardwalk Empire.”
