Elizabeth “Libby” Duethman has been hired to fill the principal position at Carmel High School, five months after former CHS principal Jon Lyons was placed on a leave of absence.
A Salinas native, Duethman has spent six years as the principal at Salinas High School, but taught for nearly 20 years beforehand. She received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Government from the University of Montana and her master’s degree in education from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.
The newly hired CUSD administrator was selected by the board of education during the closed session portion of the May 17 meeting, about a month and a half after the principal position was posted. During that time, Carmel Unified School District hired a consulting firm to collect information about candidates, and based on the leadership profile that the group created, the firm recommended a smaller pool of applicants to the district for review.
Duethman will start in her role as CHS principal on July 3.
