Clark leads Lady Padres through tumultuous season

The Padre of the Month for January is girls’ basketball junior guard Amber Clark, who has played well consistently amid the team’s early struggles.

The 10-11 Padres are just 4-7 in MTAL league play this year, but they are beginning to turn their season around, as they are now facing the same teams they have faced earlier this year.

“Hopefully we can beat some of the teams we were really close to when we played them the first time,” Clark says.

Clark leads the team in points, field goals and free throws, but hasn’t received much support from teammates as she has scored almost a third of the teams total points herself.

This has been on display in games against Greenfield, Santa Catalina and Gonzales, which resulted in a win and two losses, respectively. And back in December, Clark had two 20-point games against Harbor and San Lorenzo Valley in which the team won by 40 in both.

“It’s been really fun, and most of our games have been really close. Most of the teams in our league are pretty evenly matched so it makes every game exciting.”

The girls’ team still has a shot at playoffs. They are currently in fourth place, behind division leader and rival Pacific Grove.

Clark and the Padres were set to face off on Thursday against Greenfield on the road, and on Monday against King City at home at 6:30.
