Carmel heads to postseason with strong senior core

Returning nearly their entire roster from last season’s NorCal semifinal run, Carmel High baseball has dominated the Gabilan division, sitting at 14-2 as of April 30, a record that reflects both their experience and consistency on the field.

“We have a very determined and proud team,” head coach Mike Kelly explains. “They put in a lot of work because they want to represent themselves and the team to the highest degree.”

At the center of it all is senior standout Matt Maxon, a Stanford University commit, and one of the most dominant two-way players in the league. As of April 30, Maxon was hitting .511 in league, leading the team with 30 runs, 24 hits, 19 RBI and nine home runs, while also drawing a team-high with 15 walks.

On the mound, Maxon has been equally imposing, posting a 5-1 league record with a 0.20 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Stanford pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Thomas Eager says Maxon stood out early.

“His ability was obvious right away, but his charisma and confidence were just as impressive,” Eager explains. “He’s built relationships with the whole recruiting class—he’s the guy who puts everyone at ease.”

With 13 returning players, continuity has been the defending CCS champions’ greatest strengths. Leading the way are the five senior captains: Maxon, Sean Carr, Michael “Hawaii” Melnick, John Berretti and Kaleb Herro.

Carr, a Division-I U.C. Santa Barbara commit, has grown into one of Carmel’s most dynamic players, bringing speed and consistency to the Padres’ lineup. This season, the senior utility player is hitting .278 in league with 14 runs and 10 stolen bases.

“I’m really excited to play at the next level,” Carr says. “But I’m going to miss my teammates, coaches and our connection as a team.”

Senior infielder and right fielder Melnick has emerged as one of the Padres’ most reliable batters, hitting 0.381 with 16 RBI and 5 doubles. He plans to continue playing baseball at Monterey Peninsula College, where Melnick will be joining teammate Beretti.

“Last year I focused on what I wanted to do, like hitting a home run,” Melnick says. “This year it’s more about what I can do that’s best for the team.”

Returning varsity left fielder, John Beretti has anchored the outfield with a perfect fielding percentage, batting .317, 12 runs and 12 RBI.  Having played baseball since age 5, Beretti stepped up as captain naturally. Helping run outfield drills, leading clean ups and organizing underclassmen simply came with the role.

“This year’s team is definitely very tight, everyone’s super close,” he says.

Third baseman Kaleb Herro has provided steady defense with 24 putouts. Committed to Oregon State University to study International Affairs and Military Science, he hopes to walk on OSU’s baseball team.

“It’s the last time I’ll be on the field with all of my friends, so I’m hoping we can finish on a high note,” explains Herro. “I’ll miss hanging out with the guys more than anything.”

With experience and depth, the Padres hope to turn a dominant league performance into another statement finish in the CCS playoffs, beginning May 23.
