For consistent coverage of pandemic-related news in the Carmel school district and community at large, this year’s staff of The Carmel Sandpiper was recently awarded a Certificate of Merit in the 2020 John Swett Awards for Media Excellence, a competition sponsored by the California Teachers Association.

“The California Teachers Association recognizes and appreciates your dedication toward achieving accuracy and fairness in interpreting and reporting youth and education issues,” CTA representatives communicated to the Sandpiper staff in May.

Of 44 entries in the categories of Publications: Online or Print, Electronic Media and Student Journalism, CTA acknowledged 14 John Swett winners and 4 Certificates of Merit–The Carmel Sandpiper was the first winner in the new category of Student Journalism.

The student newspaper staff was nominated by Association of Carmel Teachers President Bill Schrier, and entries were judged by media professionals and former college journalism instructors.
