Carmel girls’ tennis serves hot start; cross country wins with close-knit group

Cross country: size doesn’t matter

Size does not reflect the strength of a team. With only seven girls on the cross country team, they are proving that it is enough to get the job done.

The team beat rival Pacific Grove, one of their top competitors, by one point along with Catalina and Stevenson, who they will be competing against later in the season.

The boys have about a dozen more runners than the girls, consisting mostly of freshmen, but they show promising signs of a great season.

After a few rumors that Coach Ables would not be returning, he is still coaching both teams, hoping for a solid season.

Boys’ water polo going swimmingly

The energy in the water is high as the boys’ water polo team pulled out multiple impressive wins early in the season.

The boys took first place in Saturday’s Doug Wahlgren Memorial Tournament for the first time, beating St. Ignatius High School 11-9. This team is ranked highly, among Bellarmine, Sacred Heart and St. Francis, some of the top high school water polo teams in the area.

Starting goalie Sam Sunde won the tournament MVP award, proving that losing 2012 graduate Ben Price is not going to be that much of a setback.

“Soquel looks like the only school that is a legitimate threat to us winning league this year,” senior Erik Nielsen says. “It is going to be a battle, but it is not out of our reach.”

Girls’ volleyball building bonds

The girls’ volleyball team is taking on a game-by-game strategy as they welcome new starters and players.

The team is known for their tighter-than-spandex bond and endless support for each other, and the first few games have been about re-building the same bond they have had in the previous years.
