After spending the last six years at Tularcitos Elementary School as a behavior intervention paraeducator, Cynthia Mejia, who goes by Ms. Cynthia on campus, has joined the Carmel High School community.
“I support students with learning disabilities, special needs of any sort, students on the spectrum and students in mainstream classrooms who are having a hard time as well,” Mejia explains.
After 13 years in behavioral intervention, Mejia discovered the importance of helping students learn to advocate for themselves.
“The biggest thing for my role is to give students dignity and respect and make sure they know that they are being heard and valued,” says the mental health advocate.
As she looks forward to making connections with students, Mejia explains the importance of learning to understand teenagers and the struggles they face today, to best assist them.
“I am motivated by seeing how much of an impact my work can have on a student’s life,” the paraeducator shares. “Seeing the progression students make on a daily basis is very rewarding.”
Mejia’s home base is with support teacher Craig Tuana in Room 14. Bouncing from class to class, she hopes to meet new people and become a friendly face around campus.
