Scott Ferguson became Carmel High School’s newest campus supervisor in December after being attracted to the Monterey Peninsula through a passion for the ocean.
“I think that the ocean has this incredible ability to inspire interest in biology and in science in incredible ways,” Ferguson says.
Over the past year, he has been working in the teacher programs division at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, helping other teachers learn more about the environment. The Laguna Beach native has also worked at Patagonia, the TGR Foundation and the Ocean Institute. Ferguson hopes to get his own teaching credential during the summer in order to eventually teach science.

Being a campus supervisor is nothing like he expected due to COVID-19 causing limited interactions with students, but through his own CHS Connect group on Fridays and helping students in the library two days a week, Ferguson still gets to be involved.
“I am working with students and checking in with them, just making sure everything is going well,” the supervisor explains. “I want to be a support system for our students.”
In his free time, the ocean lover enjoys beach activities, such as body surfing, surf fishing and beach volleyball, along with hiking with his dog in Carmel Valley, where the mountains meeting the water reminds him of where he grew up.
“The fact that you can be so close to the beach and so close to beautiful open spaces is a perfect combination that is a lot like Laguna Beach.”
