Predictions for The People’s Choice Awards: More competition than you might think

Published Nov. 12, 2020

With self-quarantine making certain shows and stars surge in rating and relevance, many viewers are looking forward to this year’s People’s Choice Awards. Brace yourself, here are the predictions for this year’s winners.

Male Artist of 2020

Artists have been able to produce some catchy hits despite COVID-19 restrictions. I would say that Drake and DaBaby are tied, especially with the popularity of DaBaby’s tracks on TikTok and Drake’s “Life is Good” music video surpassing 1 billion Youtube views. It is likely that Drake will win Male Artist of 2020.

Female Artist of 2020

All nominees share a common niche of fun and excitement, yet Ariana Grande broke the barrier with quarantine-related hit “Stuck With U.” The artist sang about caring and loving for others during the beginning of the pandemic, which makes her a plausible choice for the Female Artist award.

New Artist of 2020

If it weren’t for the overwhelming number of recent TikTok downloads, most of these artists would not be as popular as they are today. While Roddy Ricch gained popularity through songs on album “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial,” Jack Harlow had his debut with “WHATS POPPIN” and Benee’s “Supalonely” took the world by storm. It will not be surprising if Benee takes home a People’s Choice Award on Sunday.

Group of 2020

Of course, groups like Dan + Shay and The Jonas Brothers lost momentum this year. However, BTS has been in the cards for winning, especially with the song “Dynamite.”

Latin Artist of 2020

While artists like Bad Bunny and J Balvin have been Latin American pop icons for many years, Ozuna made her mark in The Black Eyed Peas’ “Mamacita,” making her a possible winner.

Collaboration Song of 2020

I was surprised when Dixie D’Amelio’s collaboration with blackbear and Lil Mosey on the song “Be Happy” was not a nominee, leaving “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion feat. Beyonce or “WAP” by Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion. The choices, the choices. Both have an equal shot, making this prediction tied.

Album of 2020

No arguments here. Taylor Swift’s album “Folklore” will win Album of 2020.

Song of 2020

While this year’s nominations may not be as catchy as Simple Plan’s “I’m Just a Kid” or as much of an anthem as Cascada’s “Everytime We Touch,” “Stuck With U” was the song we all needed yet never asked for, bringing a positive message to keep calm and carry on without racial slurs or explicit language.

Music Video of 2020

Despite COVID-19 restrictions, all nominees have done a great job in producing high-quality music videos. However, Justin Bieber’s “Holy” feat. Chance the Rapper showed Bieber in a light his “Beliebers” have never seen him in before.

Social Celebrity of 2020

At first, I thought I was going to see influencers like Charli D’Amelio or James Charles, but I was mistaken. Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian may be the likeliest winners for this category, especially Jenner, who has an advantage over sister Kim with her 8 million Instagram-follower surplus.

Style Star of 2020

Some of this year’s nominees for Style Star are ahead of their time. For example, Lil Nas X, who killed the game with “Rodeo” and “Old Town Road” in 2019, but hasn’t been flaunting his bedazzled cowboy outfits lately. Timothee Chalamet may have his interesting style choices, found in movie “A Rainy Day In New York,” to his advantage for this award.

The People’s Choice Awards will be live on E! Network on Sunday at 9 p.m.
