Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and love is in the air, but it doesn’t always stick. In order to make sense of everything romance-related, The Sandpiper’s self-proclaimed love expert is here to help.
“I’ve been dating my girlfriend for a little over six months, but Valentine’s Day is coming up and I’m not sure what to do. Do I need to do anything for her or to even ask her to be my valentine, or is it implied?”
Dear Confused Sophomore,
The short answer is yes, do something for Valentine’s Day, and especially because you’re in an established relationship. You could make it something cute and special that you know she’d like, and I’m sure she would appreciate it. While it might feel like a cliché, even just a box of chocolates or flowers can make her feel special.
“I want to ask someone to Winter Formal, but I don’t know how. I wanted to do something bigger, but I’m scared she’s going to think it’s embarrassing. She’s not the most extroverted person, and I don’t want to make her uncomfortable, but it should be special.”
Dear Extravagant,
It’s sweet that you want to make someone feel important, but be careful not to seem crazy. If you two aren’t already together and you know she’s shy, you should veer on the safer side. Anyways, Winter Formal isn’t usually the time for large gestures. Make her a poster and buy a nice gift, but leave the fireworks for the promposal.
“I have a best friend who I have been catching feelings for over the past few years. I don’t know what to do. Do I risk the friendship and make a move or suffer in silence?”
Dear Concerned Senior,
The heart wants what the heart wants. If your feelings for this friend are truly romantic, and not something you can hold back for much longer, it may be best to tell them the truth. As always, withholding the truth from your best friend may be just as damaging to your friendship as confessing the truth.
“How do I break up with my boyfriend? I lost feelings for him weeks ago, and I have noticed the chemistry between us isn’t there anymore, but I am scared to hurt him.”
Dear Worried Freshman,
Though it is never easy, ending the relationship sooner rather than later is the way to navigate the situation in the least painful way possible. The only thing that sounds more painful than a relationship breakup is having a one-sided relationship.
