Dear Reader,
Each year our paper receives dozens of letters from readers, some light-hearted, some encouraging, some critical, but all benefiting our main goal as a paper: to engage and inform readers. As a co-editor-in-chief and retiring senior, I figured it only fair that I write a letter in return.
On behalf of the entire Sandpiper staff, I would like to thank our readers for supporting us in what we love to do, which, of course, is reporting. With the rapid decline in the existence of high school publications, having the opportunity to share our paper both throughout the Carmel High School campus and the Carmel community is something for which we are grateful.
Reporting has a way of fostering community, as one is able to speak with people of all walks of life, something I have certainly felt while writing for the Sandpiper. My hope is that future Sandpiper staff feel this same appreciation for journalism, for it truly is a valuable way to connect with the local area and people.
As for my fellow “Sandpipettes,” I could not be more proud of the work they have each contributed this year, from spending endless hours on layout to writing about pressing matters to devising brutal horoscopes. This year, our writers covered local news well, including stories on Peninsula antique stores, summer internship opportunities, teen aviators, retiring CHS staff members, policies at CHS and fire risks amid an insurance crisis.
Writing for our newspaper is certainly no walk in the park, yet its challenges are outweighed by its own sense of community. Each student brings a unique element to our class environment, whether it be Dani’s comic relief, Abby’s calm demeanor, Nicole’s life-saving copy editing or Alex and Laith’s willingness to carry everyone’s newspaper boxes to their cars.
I cannot wait to see how our returning and incoming members progress in the near future, and I have full confidence that The Sandpiper is in capable, talented hands.
With gratitude,
Avery Palshaw
co-editor-in-chief
