Originally based on Rachel Reid’s “Game Changers” book series, the 2026 TV adaptation follows two fictional professional hockey players, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander, who are forced to keep their relationship hidden to protect their careers. While some may dismiss it as another enemies-to-lovers rom-com, the dynamic of Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Rozanov (Connor Storrie) sets the show apart. The duo’s electric chemistry—paired with Storrie’s flawless Russian accent—elevates every scene they share.
Overall, the show does an incredible job of balancing humor with emotional depth, weaving its themes together in a way that never feels forced.
Beyond its positive message to audiences, “Heated Rivalry” has already made a mark by simply representing the many queer athletes who still feel unable to come out due to persistent prejudice in both female- and male-dominated sports.
Much like Scott Hunter—the fictional professional hockey player who comes out and inspires change—“Heated Rivalry” has sparked a similar effect in real life. Former National Basketball League (Australia) player Andrew Ogilvy has publicly credited the show for helping create a safer space for athletes to come out.
One unfortunate side effect has been an unwanted push from some fans to romanticize real athletes who are not together nor LGBTQ+. For example, the friendship between San Jose Sharks teammates Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith has been subjected to unnecessary speculation.
If you’re looking for a show that blends just the right amount of humor with harder-hitting themes—all while delivering standout performances—then “Heated Rivalry” might be the perfect binge for you.
