Graduating Padres commit to continue athletic careers across country

From the field to the classroom, the work has paid off for several talented student athletes from Carmel High School who have signed this semester to continue their respective careers at colleges across the country, from Southern California to Baltimore.

According to the NCAA, only 6 percent of high school athletes make the jump from high school athletics to playing at the collegiate varsity level at any division. The commitments of Boston Fisher, Tallinn Loberg and Ashton Rees place them in that small percentage.

“These athletes have demonstrated incredible commitment,” says CHS athletic director Golden Anderson.

Boston Fisher

Fisher committed to play D-III water polo at Chapman University and was the primary center forward and co-captain of the CHS boys’ water polo team, where he led the team in scoring with 85 goals, while maintaining a 64% shooting average. Fisher was the Co-Offensive Player of the Year and received First Team All League honors.

“I’m excited to be playing with Chapman,” says Fisher. “They’re a strong team.”

The senior will be joining a top D-III program that took second place in the national D-III championship in 2024 and had a positional opening for center forwards.

“When I think of Boston and his commitment, I think justice was served,” says varsity coach Jerry Smith. “It’s not often you find a player with his level of integrity, commitment and enthusiasm.”

Loberg, the co-captain of the CHS boys’ lacrosse team, committed to Goucher College in Baltimore where he plans to major in Chemistry and continue his lacrosse career.

“What set Goucher apart was the coaching staff,” says Loberg. “They want to win.”

Last season the defender racked up 71 ground balls and scored nine goals to help take the team to the Division II Central Coast Section Boys Lacrosse Championship after going undefeated in league.

“Tallinn is one of those guys who’s successful in large part because of his own effort,” says Joe Johnsson, Carmel coach and defensive pole specialist. “He’s always practicing and improving. He’s really proven himself to be a great player, but when we play pickup together outside of school, sometimes he teaches me things too.”

University of San Diego after Carmel won the California 5-AA State Football Championships, aided by the running back’s 1,600 rushing yard season and 32 touchdowns.

“USD was a great opportunity for me,” says Rees. “I took a trip to campus and committed on the spot.”

Though Rees is an award-winning offensive player, he will be joining the defensive core of USD as a defensive back where he will play alongside former Padre Oscar Weigel.

Rees joins USD after they turned in an 8-3 season in 2024.

“I’m happy to see him at USD, and let me tell you, so are they,” says Anderson. “He moves like he’s 5-foot-11 or 5-foot-10, but he has the reach of someone that’s 6-foot-3. He’s a great player wherever you put him, and that extends off the field. He has this ability to make everyone around him feel warm and important.”
