Girls’ basketball hopes to rebound

Carmelgirls’ basketball hopes to successfully clinch the Mission Trail Athletic League title this year after falling short toSanta Catalinalast season.

Despite a commanding league record of 12-2,Carmelwas defeated byMenloSchoolin the second round of the Central Coast Sectionals playoffs last winter by 19 points.

This season the team will have to play without a few key, talented seniors who controlled the backboard.

“We definitely have big shoes to fill,” senior Kaitlin Davis says.

Unfortunately, the team will be struggling with a height disadvantage this year.Davisacknowledges this problem, but she still has high anticipations for the upcoming season.

“Although it is a rebuilding year, we definitely still have a chance of coming in first in MTAL with our strong defense,”Davissays.

The team will be led by head coach Jeff Nakamura, who hopes to continue the tradition of past success with the team.

“My goals for the team are always to play hard everyday and get better everyday,” Nakamura says. “If we can do that we will be successful.”

Whatever record the team ends with, team captains Davis and senior Josie Odello agree that it is essential to beat Pacific Groveand Catalina—those are the big games.
