While working in marketing operations, finance escrow, property management and state management services, Carmel High senior Kate Graham joined Carmel Realty Company for a three-week summer internship to further explore her career interest.

Graham’s internship involved a variety of tasks across different aspects of realty. She did tasks to improve the company website and social media with photography, while also preparing homes for renters and buyers, and the aspiring realtor’s curiosity helped her obtain a better understanding of what the job looks like through real-life experience.

“I liked the marketing and social media stuff,” Graham expresses, “but I realized that I don’t think I can work at a desk all day.”

Throughout her internship, being able to attend three open houses alongside a realtor was one of her favorite parts. Graham was able to learn more about herself and aspects she values in a job helping her consider how she might spend her future in the field.

Not only did the young intern observe and participate in the work Carmel Realty Company does, but she also met new people, made powerful connections with her peers and acquired useful life skills. Important techniques to succeed in customer service, such as anticipating the clients needs, adjusting to their needs until they are met and feeling cared for, were some of the ideal skills the company intended for their intern to acquire.

“I hope she was able to see some of the best realtors in the industry and watch how they succeed using those skills,” says Dan Lynch, chief executive officer and managing director of Carmel Realty Company. “I also hope that she will emulate that in her career in the future.”

The CHS senior found that she took the most away from effectively communicating and collaborating with her co-workers, along with staying organized. Although similar skills are taught in school, Graham felt her hands-on involvement while working strengthened her grasp on how to use these tools.

“It was beneficial in every aspect,” the senior shares. “You never know what a career is really like until you experience it.”

Beginning her internship with no preconceived notions of how the work environment would look, Kate Graham now has a better understanding of what pursuing a career in real estate would entail. Although her mind is not set on this specific job, the practice and work has better shaped her passions and ideas for her future career choice.
