With a vision focused on fundraising and awareness campaigns, Carmel High students guide the Doctors Without Borders club through Médecins Sans Frontières, the international humanitarian organization, in order to aid underserved communities worldwide.
Founded by sophomore Patrick Reeves, the club aims to support the organization known for providing medical care in crisis zones. Inspired by the organization’s mission, Reeves established the club to make a difference.
The club’s activities will include organizing fundraising events with all proceeds going directly to Doctors Without Borders. Additionally, they plan to host guest speakers and speeches from club members to raise awareness about global health issues and the importance of humanitarian aid.

“The organization is a French-speaking nonprofit that was founded in France, so I agreed to advise when Patrick approached me with the club last year,” club adviser and CHS French teacher Suzanne Marden explained.
Doctors Without Borders was founded in 1971 by journalists and doctors in France, amid famine and war in Nigeria. Since their founding, MSF has remained impartial in their work across 80 countries, including in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. MSF has been active in areas of conflict such as in the Gaza Strip and Sudan.
“We want to get people who are interested in medicine to help support those who practice medicine,” said CHS sophomore Gabe Fejes, vice president of speakers.
Looking forward, the club has ambitious plans to expand its range and impact. According to Reeves, they aim to connect with universities across California and seek sponsorship to become a recognized sub-charter of Doctors Without Borders recognized college clubs. This would allow the club to gain more credibility and experience through established student branches
Doctors Without Borders meets every Friday in Room 26.
