After 15 years in her busy role at CHS, athletics secretary Tammy Waldman will be retiring Feb. 27, creating a significant gap in the athletic department that will need to be filled.

“It’s time for a new chapter,” Waldman says.

During her time at Carmel High School, Waldman has played an important role in scheduling and coordinating athletic events, as well providing a friendly face and an always-full jar of candy at the front office.

While the school has not started the process of hiring a replacement, athletic director Golden Anderson says he is not worried about this yet, since there is time after the first semester ends to work it out.

“I would love to have someone hired prior to her retirement so they can come in for a transitional phase,” says the athletic director.

Waldman’s job involves managing all of the paperwork athletes and coaches need, from organizing buses for away games to making sure students have emergency cards, which allow them to compete in sports.

“There are a lot of things she does that make things go smoothly,” says varsity boys’ head basketball coach Kurt Grahl. “She keeps us organized as individual sports so we don’t have to do all of the paperwork or run around to see if we have a bus.”

This help allows coaches to spend more time working with their players instead of filling out mountains of paperwork. As well as aiding coaches, Waldman has streamlined the way students apply for sports, making it easy for athletes to get an emergency card, which shows that they are eligible to play a sport and begin practicing.

“If you don’t have all the stuff you need, she tells you what you need and how to get it,” says sophomore Jackson Ruskell, who played football this fall.

According to her co-workers, Waldman is always willing to put in the extra work, such as attending and organizing Saturday football games or staying after school to make sure practice times are going smoothly.

Although she will not hold an official position anymore, Waldman wants to stay involved with CHS athletics.

“I would love to work with the Athletic Boosters and grow that program so it can be available for more games,” says Waldman of the nonprofit designed to help fund CHS sports.

As she completes her last few months on the job, Waldman hopes she has left a positive impression on campus and made sports more accessible to all students.
