There is no better feeling than bringing in the groceries in one trip, and to obtain this satisfaction one must commit one’s mind, body and spirit to the lifestyle of a gym rat. Beyond the technical machines and weights, we gym rats live off the atmosphere and community found at the gym. Luckily, we are blessed with a wide variety of high quality gyms around the peninsula. Here are five excellent local gyms, so now you have no excuse to put off your New Year’s (or spring) fitness resolution until next year.

Sports Center 301 E Franklin Street, Monterey

With a pool, basketball courts and a full gym, it seems almost too good to be true. The Sports Center provides a family friendly environment for all kinds of gym-goers and has a kids’ sports league along with a daycare. Although the spacious atmosphere and abundance of equipment is a plus, the one downfall is that although on weekdays, hours run from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., on the weekends members are limited to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

$34 – $55 per month

Anytime Fitness 27300 Rancho San Carlos Road, Carmel-By-The-Sea

Anytime Fitness provides customers with a welcoming and energetic environment, but chances are you will be surrounded by teenage boys once school gets out. There is a nice balance between cardio and weight machines, and members have a total of three rooms to meander through and procrastinate their workout in. At Anytime Fitness, members have 24-hour access to all locations across the country, so when that pump of energy kicks in at 3 a.m. you know where to go.

with the ring dips and placed pretty low on the leaderboard. Although more expensive, members are not only provided with 24-hour access to the training facilities, but also have unlimited access to HXBX and HXBX Plus classes.

$154 per month

Gold’s Gym 1510 Del Monte Center, Monterey

If you want to feel small standing next to a 44-year-old divorcee, Gold’s Gym is the place to go.  There are intimidating physique standards at Gold’s as people strive to carry on famous bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger’s legacy. For only $50 per month,

members are not only provided with enough weights and high quality machines to put hair on anybody’s chest, but they also have the luxury of a sauna, caffeinated drinks and the constant reminder of Joe Gold’s wise words: “That’s the object of going to a gym, having fun.”
